The 2nd annual Julian Wilson Serious Fun event, presented by Hurley was hailed as another resounding success as over 145 kids registered for the 130 available spots on a perfect Sunshine Coast Saturday morning.
Last week-end tickle park at Coolum Beach was turned into a veritable playground representing the world number two’s upbringing, which all revolved around having as much fun as he could. If Wilson wasn’t surfing on all types of craft, he was playing golf or riding motorbikes in the hinterland.
Julian’s sponsors and a handful of associated local businesses all chipped in to create another memorable day filled with activities, giveaways and time in the water with Julian himself, including a mini putt-putt course, a barber shop by Captain Sip Sop’s and a hair salon by Ruby Blue. The event once again had a thread of pink running through many touch points on the day, the ‘Keep it Squeezy‘ campaign Julian and Hurley put together each year, a nod to early detection and raising awareness for the disease that has had a personal impact on the Wilson family.
I just want to give back and bring something special back to the place that it all began for me.
Running alongside the fun day activities was the Julian Wilson invitational. Sixteen U/17 surfers handpicked by Julian himself all competing in a WSL world championship tour style event, complete with surfers lockers, format and customised contest jerseys. This year also saw the inclusion of two international wildcards invited to the event in the form of Jett Shilling (San, Clemente, California) and Bronson Meydi (Bali, Indonesia).
For me I spend the whole year travelling on tour and I don’t get to see the level of junior surfing in Australia so much, so it’s an awesome opportunity to see where that levels at.
The highly competitive invitational was won by Bondi Surfer, Grayson Hinrichs in a tough final tussle with the impressive Californian, Jett Shilling who was a standout all event long. Cash prizes for first and second, along with surfboards, Oakley sunglasses and a 50 cc motorbike were given away at the well attended presentation.
