The craft of storytelling to make brands (and people) more accessible, relatable and engaging. Scratching beneath the surface creating authentic narrative around purpose, character, beliefs, values, vision and culture.
Brand journalism is marketing through journalism. Instead of using content that directly promotes the brand through traditional marketing tactics, brand journalism focuses on building stories and other informational content that highlights value from a different point of view.
We unpack and/or understand the brands ‘why’, the story and the strategy. – Then we bring it to life through words, creating a brand voice, narrative and messaging that conveys brand DNA, cultivates culture and creates meaningful engagement and brand converts.
We provide various services in this space including personal development, career transition, speaking engagements, mentoring, athlete marketing, management and coaching across individuals, businesses, brands, teams and NGO’s.

Former professional surfer, Brad Bricknell, founded The Business of Surf after working in the actions sports industry for over 20 years. His surfing career highlights included winning a National Mens Title in South Africa, surfing in two WSL World Championship Tour events as a wildcard, and claiming Team Gold at the ISA World Games. His working career started in South Africa as a marketing coordinator for a long time sponsor, and in 2005 he moved to Australia with his wife Caryn to further his career. Throughout his time in the industry Brad has gained experience in private, public and start-up businesses in the areas of marketing, sales, brand and general management.
After taking a sabbatical with his family in 2016, Brad started to develop his passion for writing, brand journalism and mentoring. Seeking a flexible work lifestyle that combined his passion and experience, he discovered a need in the Australia/Pacific market to service the action sports industry with a premium online business insights platform – and after nudge from a few friends – The Business of Surf was born in June 2017.
After 18 months in the original form, the business evolved into the boutique media, marketing and consulting agency it is today, following the additional opportunities of Editor at Surfing Life Magazine, Personal Development & Career Transition Consultant at Surfing Australia and part-time commentator with the World Surf League . Through uniquely dovetailing these areas of the action sports industry, Brad has established himself as an expert in the field.
